About the Department

Established in November of 1956 the Lawrence Township Volunteer Fire Company #1 began offering fire protection for the residents of Lawrence Township.

The company began responding a 1936 American LaFrance pumper from the Fire Chief’s back yard. They soon acquired property from the Clearfield Area School District on Mill Rd. Construction of a small “L” shaped brick garage would soon be the first home of LT#1.

The garage met the immediate needs for the Firehouse but was later out grown. It became very difficult to hold the company meetings in the tiny garage so in the early 70’s an addition of a social room was added.

Lawrence Township Fire Company #1 cycled through a few pieces of apparatus in the more than 50 years of its life including a Ford cab over pumper an American Lafrance pumper a Ford FMC pumper two Dodge brush trucks an International Rescue and a Chevy Suburban.

Through this cycle the Company out grew the Firehouse and constructed a new 4000 square foot facility to house the apparatus and social room. The addition of a new Saulsbury Rescue in 2004 and a Ford Expedition completed the full compliment of equipment at the MadHouse. The company purchased a bordering property in 2004 and added 3.1 acres to its asset list and constructed a 10,500 square foot state of the art banquet facility. Company 5 has over one million dollars in assets including four buildings and over four acres on Mill Rd. The company has an annual call volume of 450-500, and continues to grow in area protected and served.

In 2005 Company 5 began participating in the Office of the State Fire Commissioners Certification program. In 2007 the company boasted a 50 percent participation with the program and was recognized by the Fire Commissioners office.

In 2010 we achieved 100 percent participation and continue to aggressively train and prepare to answer the calls for service from our residents in Lawrence Twp. and surrounding areas. Lawrence Township Fire Company #1 comes from a long tradition of providing a top notch service and will always strive to do so in the coming years.

Why Lawrence Township Fire Company #1?

There is plenty of opportunity to serve your community through the volunteer fire and EMS service, and much of it has nothing to do with fire fighting.

Fire and emergency medical services are one of the most challenging professions today. It is this diversity that inspires most men and women to enter the fire and EMS services. This business is not for everyone however. You need more than just desire to help people. You need courage, dedication, assertiveness and a willingness to learn new skills and face new challenges.

The personal rewards and satisfaction received from the volunteer fire service is often beyond description. There is a sense of accomplishment after controlling a building fire, joy and elation when a life is saved, compassion for accident victims, and fulfillment in teaching fire safety.

If you are looking for a change of pace or excitement in your life, the world of volunteer fire services is for you. If this action-filled lifestyle does not appeal to you, have no fear, there is plenty more that can be done in the business of firefighting that does not include running into burning buildings or other situations.

We have various committees within the company, all of which you will be welcomed to join. Running and maintaining a company of our size is time consuming and at times, costly, so the volunteering of your time is something we value. Just the maintenance of the building and grounds alone runs into quite a piece of change. We also maintain a computer system, attend to regular truck and equipment maintenance, as well as tending to fundraising, banquets, memorial services, member activities, parades, and a full menu of things that need to be done by the volunteers. Other committees include video, fire prevention, grant research and our maintenance committee.
